(AP) Sen. Ted Cruz on Monday will address the Chi Health clinic in South Bend, Indiana, after the Senate voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to override Gov.
Eric Holcomb’s veto of the bill.
Cruz said he is a big supporter of Chi Health, but he also wants to ensure that “we are fully informed about the risks of the new medical marijuana law.”
The bill passed the Senate by a 23-16 vote, with eight Republicans voting no and one Democrat abstaining.
The bill, Senate Bill 1619, would allow doctors to prescribe cannabis oil to treat the most severe forms of epilepsy.
But the bill also includes a provision that would let anyone who is at least 21 years old with a doctor’s prescription for cannabis oil for treatment of “serious medical conditions” receive it free of charge.
Cruz, who said he has “been advocating for the use of medical marijuana for decades,” said he believes the bill “should be allowed to come to a vote.”
He said he will be “voting with my colleagues on this legislation to repeal the new law.”
Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., voted against the bill, but Kirk and several colleagues who were not in the chamber said they have heard from many patients who were left feeling underwhelmed by the legislation.
