Westside animal shelter euthanizes 10 dogs after they become sick

WASHINGTON — Westside Animal Shelter euthanized 10 dogs Monday after they became sick and became aggressive toward people.
The shelter said the dogs were a mix of dogs that had been in and out of the shelter and dogs that were still living in their homes.
The shelter has a shelter-in-place policy and a veterinarian, said the shelter’s executive director, Kristine Fazio.
She said the staff was notified of the dogs’ behavior at the shelter about 3:30 p.m.
Monday.
She added that the dogs became aggressive and began chasing people.
They then started running up and down the stairs in the shelter.
Fazio said it was unclear how many dogs were euthanizing at the time, but that the number was believed to be close to 20.
She did not know if the dogs would be put up for adoption.
Fazo said the decision to euthanize the animals was based on health concerns, but added that she was unsure how many of the animals were in the shelters care.
She said it wasn’t clear if the shelter euthanasia was related to the dogs becoming sick.
The Westside Shelter, which is located in downtown Bethesda, has been at the center of a controversy over animal shelters across the country, as well as a controversy at a shelter in North Carolina.
The center was set up in 2003 by an anonymous donor to house stray animals.
It was a refuge for animals that are euthanased because of their health issues, the Washington Post reported.
