Which neighborhood is best for breast cancer?

The most dangerous neighborhoods for breast cancers, by ZIP code, are in the southwest, southwest and southeast, according to a study.
In contrast, the most “healthy” neighborhoods, according the study, are the southeast and northeast, which includes neighborhoods in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Chicago and Washington, D.C. “Neighborhoods with higher percentages of racial and ethnic minorities are generally considered to have lower rates of breast cancer than communities with lower percentages of those groups,” the study’s authors wrote.
The study included more than 8,000 residents who had cancer and found that black and Hispanic residents were 2.4 times more likely to have a diagnosed breast cancer.
Black and Hispanic women also were 3.7 times more than twice as likely as white women to die from breast cancer during their lifetime, according a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The researchers also found that the highest rates of cancer deaths among blacks and Hispanics were among women who lived in the poorest neighborhoods.
The authors said the findings should give policymakers and the public a better sense of how safe neighborhoods are to get breast cancer screenings and treatment.
The research was done for the American Cancer Society, and the findings were published in the New England J. Natl Cancer Inst.
